CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. — An explosion at an apartment complex apparently ignited by insect foggers being used to control a cockroach infestation has displaced three families.

Fire officials in the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights say a tenant in one of the three apartments set off 10 cans of insecticide fogger. That’s five to 10 times the recommended amount.

The resulting blast blew out some of the complex’s load-bearing walls, leading city officials to condemn the entire apartment building. No one was injured in the Sunday explosion, and the families have been placed in temporary housing.

Fire investigators said they suspect electricity from a refrigerator detonated the cloud of insecticide.

The tenant said he used the foggers after his landlord didn’t respond to complaints about the cockroach problem.
